Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report
11/13-11/19
Hola Amigos,
The fishing down here in the East Cape continues to be red hot. The tuna bite has moved to the north and is now right in front of La Ribera and Hotel Punta Colorada. Most boats have been catching limits on yellowfin tuna just a few miles off the shore. The tuna have not been very big, mostly football size, but there have been a few in the 35-50 pound range. The dorado bite also continues to be red hot with many boats coming back to the dock with limits on dorado as well. The best dorado bite has been off of La Ribera and also right in front of Hotel Palmas De Cortez. Most of the dorado have been in the 10-25 pound range, but we did see a few that topped 35 pounds. We are also starting to see bigger numbers on the sierra down near Punta Colorada and many anglers are catching them right off of the beach in front of the hotel. The roosterfish are still hanging around as well, and many anglers are catching them right in front of Palmas De Cortez and Punta Colorada. Most of the roosters have been in the 10-20 pound range, but we did see a nice 35 pounder caught right in front of Hotel Palmas De Cortez the other day. Some of the other species that we are still seeing out there include stripe marlin, sail fish, Jack Cravalle, skip jacks, cabrilla, pargo and wahoo. The day time high this week in the East Cape has been a very comfortable 82 degrees, with a night time low of 68 degrees. The water temperatures continue to drop and we are now seeing water temperatures ranging from 75 to 80 degrees. That’s it for this week my friends. Until next week!

Saludos a todos,
Fishing in November continues to be excellent for all. We just came off the water having fished two pangas for the Marvin Paul party and had a fantastic day. Lots of roosters, jacks, sierras, dorado and one very nice Wahoo ate their flies today. Add to that near perfect weather, good conversation and a day doesn’t get much better.
Our folks have been catching roosters, Jacks and Sierras from the beach with the odd barred pargo, lookdown and lady fish thrown in. We got the opportunity to take a guides day off this past Tuesday and spent the day around Boca del Alamo and the first rocks going into Bahia del los Muertos. My first cast of the day nailed a nice rooster, the first of several that day followed by Jack Crevalles, sierras and pargo. We snorkeled around the rocks and watched a host of predators tear into a large bait ball of sardina. We very much enjoyed the tranquil scene of the reef as well. Lots of parrot fish, angle fish, yellow fin croaker, snappers and fish I do not know the names of were on constant parade in an around the rocks and coral heads.
The fishing fleets has been hitting dorado and sails off Punto Pescadero, the Gordo Banks, Medgano Blanco and straight out from Punta Colorada. The tuna bite is for the most part on at the Gordos. Wahoo, striped marlin and several Blue Marlin rounded out the catch this past week.
The weather continues with calm winds, warm temperatures and flat seas. The mornings are cool enough to almost want a sweat shirt. Sea surface temperatures are holding at 82 degrees. November is a great time on the Baja and all too often overlooked. As I look around the hotel I see a lot of familiar faces of folks who have been coming here in the fall. They are on to something and have good reason to return year after year.
That concludes our report till next week.

FISHING REPORT
10/30-11/6
Vela – The Spanish word for sail. This was the Spanish word of the week down here in the East Cape. Early in the week while the winds were blowing from the north, we saw lots of sails gliding across the water, as the windsurfers took to the water in full force. Later in the week when the winds laid down, the fishermen took to the water and landed over 200 sailfish in only 4 days. Billfish were the primary target this week as the 4th Annual Salt Patrol Marlin tournament took center stage at Hotel Palmas De Cortez. This group mostly from Washington went after the big points that came with each billfish landed and released. Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo also counted in the points total but in much smaller numbers. Anyone who brought in a billfish was automatically disqualified. We saw 10 blue marlin, 140 stripe marlin, and as mentioned before, over 200 sailfish landed and released this week between the four Van Wormer Resorts. It was a bit of a slow week for yellowfin tuna and dorado as most anglers were after billfish, but we did see approximately 200 dorado, 80 yellowfin tuna, 12 wahoo, 10 amber jacks, and 8 pargo this week. The big story came out of Cabo San Lucas, where the Western Outdoor News Big Tuna Jackpot is taking place this week. One angler landed the biggest yellowfin tuna ever weighed on a regulation IGFA scale in the history of Cabo San Lucas. This monster tuna weighed in at a whopping 383 lbs. It was the 5 largest yellowfin ever weighed anywhere in the world. The tuna was reportedly caught near the Gordo Banks near San Jose Del Cabo. Congratulations to everyone involved in landing that tremendous fish. The water temperatures here in the East Cape have cooled down a bit. We had been in the mid 80’s and this week we have seen the waters in the upper 70’s. The air temperature has been a very comfortable 86 degrees in the day and dropping down to the mid to upper 70’s at night. That’s it for this week from the East Cape. Until next week! Saludos a todos
The wind I wrote about in last weeks report has gone and the weather has been near perfect this past week. The days are running in the mid eighties, while the nights are cool and pleasant. This is the Baja’s best time of year for weather and scenery. The country side is a resplendent green, the cactus and brush decorated in flowers.
The fishing fleet is scattering to all parts to find fish. Reports of sailfish are coming down from the ocho ocho, big tuna from the Gordo Banks, everything with the porpoise twenty miles straight out. The off shore catch is far from wide open but is consistent and varied. Wahoo continue to be a pleasant surprise for some anglers along with some good pargo fishing in the rocks.
Our last off shore day was with Jack Bremer who caught some nice dorados. We headed inshore at the end of the day and got on a good pargo and Jack bite just off of the point at Punta Colorada.
Most of our guide trips this past were either from the beach or on kayaks and the fishing was excellent. Our fly fishers caught plenty of roosters, sierra, pargo, lady fish and jacks. The bait and switch method using a hookless plug worked well for Tom Pianko at the old fish camp. The biggest challenge was keeping the roosters from grabbing the plug and then refusing to let go. The teasing game pretty much ended each time an aggressive rooster tried to swim off with the teaser clamped in its mouth.
That concludes our report for the week. There is still good fishing ahead. Hasta Luego

Hola amigos,
The first true Norte is blowing outside as I write this report. The winds are expected to die down tonight with calm conditions predicted for the next few days. Untill the winds kicked in we were experiencing a nice mix of fishing, both from the beach and off shore.
From our perspective the dorado bite dropped this past week on average. Some days were excellent, other days slow. We managed to find some dorado each day though and the catch included some good sized fish. The number of sails picked up as did the striped marlin. The bite is not hot, but any improvement is appreciated. Tuna can be found swimming with the dolphin any where from 12 miles to 30 miles straight out. Most of the tuna are coming on cut squid and have not been accessible to the fly fishers.
Inshore we have had a blast on jacks, ladyfish, sierra, pargo and roosters. We have been guiding the beach and by kayak and plenty of fun has been had by all. Casa Glen, Punta Colorada, las Salinas have been the hot spots at different times. Some of the best fishing has been right in front of Hotel Punta Colorada.
The temperatures have continued cool for this time of year, in other words delightful. Water conditions are ideal at 82 degrees. Bait fish are plentiful with smaller sardinas and some finger sized mullet available. The conventional gear fishermen are stopping to get squid before heading out for the tuna grounds.
There is still some good fishing to be had for the year 2009. We have slowed down on our guide days, but are taking good advantage of some free time to get in some personal fishing time. Life is good.
Hasta Luego till the next report

Hello everyone,
We had another great week in the East Cape, with the tuna and dorado bite still holding up. The numbers on both tuna and dorado came down a bit from the last three weeks, but we also had less boats going out, so that may have had something to do with it. We did see over 400 yellowfin tuna landed this week ranging in size from 15-80 pounds. Most of the tuna is still to the south near Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes. The dorado bite continues to be excellent with over 400 dorado landed this week ranging in size from 12-50 pounds. We had a really good dorado bite to the north near Bahia de Los Suenos, and near the ocho ocho marker. We also saw a drop in the number of billfish landed with only 15 stripe marlin, 3 blue marlin and 9 sails landed this week. Some of the other species we saw this week included 6 wahoo, 3 pampano, 10 pargo, 3 amber jacks and over 100 giant squid.
That’s it for this week, until next week….Saludos, Eddie Dalmau/Van Wormer Resorts

Hello everyone,
I know this is starting to sound like a broken record, but the fishing this week was the same as it was last week….WIDE OPEN! There continues to be a great tuna bite to the south between Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes, with most boats catching limits on nice tuna. This week the biggest tuna landed weighed in at a whopping 264lbs. We also saw tuna in the 60lb.-100lb. range, with football size tuna as well. Most anglers are using sardines, cedar plugs and small to medium marlin lures. The dorado bite also continues to be very good, with over 500 dorado landed this week between all four resorts. The billfish was a little slower than last week, but I attribute that to the great tuna bite. Those who did land billfish went north approximately 20 miles north of Punta Pescadero near Bahia de Los Suenos. We also saw some nice wahoo numbers with over 20 landed this week. Some of the other species landed this week included amber jack, pargo, pompano, roosterfish, and bonita. The giant squid are still being caught right out in front of Hotel Palmas De Cortez with over 150 landed this week. That is it for this week my friends. Hope to see you all in the East Cape soon. Eddie Dalmau/Van Wormer Resorts
Kraig Luther & Mike Burroughs landed this pair of 96lbs. tunas while fishing at Hotel Palmas De Cortez.
